Lotts Creek Community Wellness Center
The Lotts Creek Wellness Program is a multi-faceted health awareness and outreach program serving Knott and Perry counties in Eastern Kentucky. These counties are two of the poorest counties not only in Kentucky, but in the nation as well. They are also two of the unhealthiest counties in the nation boasting much higher than the average instances of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

This outreach program will expand the delivery of healthcare services to include new services provided through school based health curriculum, in-home health and nutrition education, monthly hands-on nutrition classes, and referrals to primary health, dental, adn mental health services as necessary.

Lotts Creek Community School is unique due to its strong ties to the community since 1933. Using the school for its base, the Wellness Program has purchased a state-of-the art fitness center that is free for not only the school, but the community at large as well. Utilizing the fitness center as a center piece of our program allows for community members to seek health education ans support locally whereas in contrast they would have to drive or pay monthly dues at a gym.

The Wellness Program is building on the already established Medicine Assistance Program which currently serves 100 clients in its partnership with UK North Fork Valley and Web MD. Expanding even further on this relationship the Wellness Program has partnered with the Knott County Extension Office, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Lotts Creek Community School, as well as the before mentioned North Fork Valley Clinic for health serices and referrals.

Proposed goals for the federally funded three year HRSA grant include making 80 health referrals, monthly home visits, and adding more health related activities to the school curriculum. Future events include a "battle of the bulge" type weight loss event for school faculty and staff, a field day for MR individuals in the school and community, and a weekly ladies night to promote health and other wellness relate activities.
